Honestly speaking, I love junk food. There is no other way to dress it up, I like sugary foods, frosted desserts, and carbonated drinks. I have been a picky eater my entire life, and as an adult, my food preferences have not changed. As I get older, my love of junk food has only hindered my physical and mental health. I made a vow to myself to become mindful of the foods I put into my body. Now, instead of surviving on cookies and candies, I have started to incorporate healthy and energizing snacks to help me thrive throughout the day.

Every time you eat is a chance to nourish your body and brain.

As a stay-at-home mom and entrepreneur, 90% of my weekdays are spent in the comfort of my home. Although convenient, my home office is only a few steps away from the kitchen, which is a problem if I do not practice self-discipline. After working all morning, the afternoon slump kicks in and the junk food starts to call my name. To remain disciplined against unhealthy junk foods, I include healthy snacks in my daily meal plan to help hold me accountable.

Your body will tell you what it needs, so give it healthy and energizing snacks as fuel.

The food you eat determines how well you function throughout the day. Because your body constantly needs energy to perform at its best, filling your body with artificial sugars and processed food will only cause you to crash and burn. To combat the dreaded afternoon slump, you have to feed your body the things it needs to keep going throughout the day. When you feel bored, stressed, or hungry for a treat, your natural reaction may be to go grab something to eat. Your body will tell you what it needs, so listen closely. Specific cravings are your body’s way of telling you that you are lacking particular vitamins and minerals.

Whatever your food preferences, there is a plethora of healthy food options to choose from to fuel your body. When choosing your snacks, look for foods rich in:

  • fiber
  • iron
  • antioxidants
  • vitamins
  • minerals

These foods have the proper nutrients to fuel your body so that you can remain energized throughout the day. For example, Fruits are loaded with vitamins and antioxidants which give you quick energy. High-fiber foods keep your blood sugar and energy levels strong and steady throughout the day. Determine what your body needs, and feed it accordingly.

Snacking healthy does not have to be boring, so choose what you like! If you like sweet snacks, choose to consume light snacks with natural sugars such as fruits or berries. My favorite healthy snack is popcorn. Microwave popcorn is easy to prepare, low in calories, and has a lot of fiber, leaving you feeling full and energized!

    I love this list! I’m a major snacker throughout the day, but sometimes I end up eating only chips and candy, and the sugar crash is real. This list gave me tons of ideas to add to my grocery list this week.

    Great list! I am so guilty of gravitating to snacks high in carbs with no real nutritional value! I want to start incorporating better items like all of these!
